The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team recorded shutout wins over Arkansas-Little Rock and Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon in Arkansas. The wins move SFA to 6-2 on the season, and pushes the team's win streak to four matches. SFA also starts the 2012 conference season 1-0.
"It's always important to get first conference victory out of the way, so we are pleased with the results," said Sullivan. "I felt that Julia (Lorca) and Laura (Servise) came out and played really well for us. Both came ready to play and picked up key wins for us. It is a great asset for a coach to have the depth to plug players into different spots and have them respond to the challenge."
SFA has now outscored its last four opponents by a combined score of 27-1 during its current four-match win streak. The `Jacks took an early lead in sweeping the doubles competition in both matches. SFA dominated singles by winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Only sophomore Jithmie Jayawickrema was pushed to a third set before recording a win at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Julia Lorca recorded one of the more overwhelming performances of the afternoon by dispensing of her opponent, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
It was a similar situation in the win over the Sugar Bears. After taking a 1-0 lead in doubles competition, SFA posted straight set victories in five of the six singles matches. Jayawickrema moved to the No. 3 singles position, but was pushed to a third set before recording the win.
SFA returns to action Sunday, Feb. 19, when they travel to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State. The match against the Bulldogs is slated to begin at 1 p.m. -SFA-
