DENTON, Texas - The Ladyjack volleyball team hit just .108, its lowest output of the season, on Monday in dropping a Labor Day matinee, 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-21) at North Texas.
SFA (6-3) was coming off winning each of its last two matches of the Skyhawk Invitational and was winding down a 1,500-mile, six-day road swing. It was the first time in the 22-match history of the series that the Mean Green (4-4) were able to pull off a sweep of the Ladyjacks.
Just one match off of putting five players in double-figure kills versus UAB, SFA did not have a single player reach the 10-kill mark against the Mean Green. Sabrina Burns and Katzy Randall each had seven apiece. In all, SFA had just two less kills for the match than UNT, who hit just .191 itself, but was hampered by six more attack errors and 11 total service miscues.
Eboni Godfrey led the Mean Green with a dozen kills and four blocks, while Melanie Boykins added nine kills of her own.
Six service errors and a .135 attack percentage in the first set put the Ladyjacks in a quick 1-0 hole after North Texas never trailed in the first frame. The Mean Green raced out to a quick 7-3 lead and had SFA playing from behind throughout the set, and despite four kills from Randall helping the Ladyjacks get back to within two points late in the frame, the Mean Green was still able to hold SFA at bay.
The second set did not fare much better with UNT hitting .522 and committing just one attack error in handing SFa it's most lopsided single set since the opening frmae of the year. The Mean Green built another early 7-3 lead and only added to it from there. Consecutive mistakes by SFA helped push the lead to double figures at 19-9 before two more miscues in the final three points helped send UNT into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage.
UNT then closed things out in the third, despite hitting just .062; however, SFA hit -.030 in the finale and never regained the lead after scoring the first two points of the set.
SFA will travel home and open up its home slate on Friday when it hosts undefeated Texas A&M at Shelton Gym at 6:00 p.m. It is the first of consecutive weekends in which the Ladyjacks will host a round-robin tournament.
