
Nelson Named Semifinalist for Campbell Trophy

DALLAS, Texas - Senior punter Drew Nelson has been named a semifinalist for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy, and a candidate for the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award. Nelson is one of 127 players from all levels of collegiate football, one of only 33 NCAA FCS players and one of only four Southland Conference players to be a semifinalist.
To be nominated candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
A three-time All-SLC selection, Nelson is one of the school's all-time leading punters. He has have averaged nearly 42 yards per punt during his career, and is coming off one of his better games as a Lumberjack. In the team's last outing, Nelson was called on eight times during the game and did a great job flipping the field on Texas State, averaging nearly 46 yards per punt including a 58 yards.
Owner of the sixth-longest punt in school history, Nelson has earned second-team all-conference honors each of the past two seasons, and came into the 2011 campaign as a first-team All-SLC selection. Through four games this year, Nelson has posted a career-best 43.5 yards per punt average.
