SFA LOOKS GET TO .500 AS TEXAS STATE COMES TO TOWN: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will look to put an end to its current two-game slide Saturday when they host Texas State. Both teams enter Saturday's game with an identical 1-2 (.333) record but headed in opposite directions. The 'Jacks have dropped two straight after a season-opening win over McMurry, while the Bobcats put an end to their two-game slide with a 10-point victory over Tarleton State last week. Saturday's game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium. SFA vs. THE BOBCATS: The Lumberjacks trail the all-time series to Texas Sate, 29-55-1 (.347). SFA will look to put an end to a four-game slide against Bobcats who have won six of the last seven meetings between the two schools. The 'Jacks' lone victory during that stretch was a 24-13 decision in 2006. Since 1965, SFA is 13-10 (.562) against Texas State in Nacogdoches, but have lost the last three home contests. BYE-BYE: Saturday's game marks the first time since the 1987 season that SFA and Texas State have met without conference implications. Texas State, along with UTSA, accepted an invitation to the Western Athletic Conference prior to the 2011-12 season, making Saturday's showdown a non-conference game against an FCS independent school. LOOKING BACK TO THE 2010 MEETING: The Lumberjacks appeared to put an end to their slide against Texas State last season in Nacogdoches. The 'Jacks dominated the game for 50 minutes, leading 24-0 with just over nine minutes remaining. But a following Texas State touchdown, SFA fumbled a kickoff return and a punt return and the Bobcats rallied for 28 unanswered points to record a four-point win, 28-24. It was the 'Jacks' only conference loss of the season. GROUND ATTACK: The Lumberjacks carried the ball 26 times for 85 yards Saturday against Baylor, and attempted 22 passes. It marks the first time SFA has recorded more rushing attempts than passing since a 92-0 victory over Texas College in 2009. MISCUE ISSUE: Miscues hurt the Lumberjack offense for a second consecutive week. After turning the ball over four times, and surrendering 91 yards in penalties against No. 4 Northern Iowa, SFA followed that up with two turnovers and nine penalties for 52 yards in the weather-shortened game at No. 19 Baylor. SFA moved the ball inside the BU 24-yard line on its first three possessions but turned the ball over on downs, throwing an interception and losing a fumble. The interception came inside the Baylor 10, while the fumble occured inside the BU five-yard line. THE COACHES: J.C. Harper became the 18th head coach of the SFA Lumberjack football team in December 2006. A two-time SLC Coach of the Year, Harper has guided SFA to consecutive conference titles and playoff appearances. Harper is 24-27 (.471) in five seasons as a head coach. Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione is in his second tour of duty with the Bobcats. He is 188-103-2 (.645) in 26 seasons as a head coach, and 14-11 (.560) in his third season in San Marcos. |
