PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team has been ranked 17th in the nation according to the Sports Network Preseason Top-25 poll released Monday afternoon. The 'Jacks are the highest ranked of three Southland schools to land in the poll.
A top-10 team each of the past two seasons, SFA will open the season one spot ahead of Central Arkansas, and three ahead of McNeese State. SFA enters the 2011 season with high expectations returning eight of 11 starters on offense, but will be looking to replace the 2010 Walter Payton Award winner Jeremy Moses at quarterback. The frontrunners for the starting nod are junior Dalton Williams and sophomore Brady Attaway.
Whoever the starter is at quarterback, he will be surrounded by a savvy group of veterans. SFA returns its top three options at receiver including All-America selections Gralyn Crawford and Cordell Roberson. The new signal caller will also be protected by the return of four starters on the offensive line, including all-conference selection George Bias, Corey Dickerson and John Steel.
SFA enters the 2011 campaign looking to win its third consecutive Southland title. The 2010 season marked a historic run for the 'Jacks as they became the first team in program history to record back-to-back conference crowns.
The 'Jacks are slated to kick off the 2011 season Thursday, Sept. 1, when it hosts McMurry. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
