NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The first week of the 2011 preseason camp is in the books, and the Stephen F. Austin coaching staff will have an opportunity to evaluate the team's progress Saturday evening with a scrimmage. The 'Jacks will take to the field Saturday for 7 p.m. scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium.
"I've been real impressed with our guys this week," said two-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year J.C. Harper. "This has not been as easy week, with football, classes and the heat, but I've been very pleased with their effort. We have a lot of young guys who have been improving every day and they are ready to step on the field for the scrimmage."
The Lumberjacks will be looking to replace several key players on both sides of the ball from last season. In addition to the loss of quarterback Jeremy Moses, SFA will also be looking to replace All-Americans Jabara Williams and Kenneth Charles and all-conference selection Sean Warren.
"Any time you lose NFL caliber talent like Jabara (Williams) and Kenneth (Charles) it is very hard to replace, especially in the middle of your defense," said Harper. "But we have some young guys who are ready to step up and fill that void. I've been real happy with what I've seen from Weekendfer Saurit and Keith Watson so far. Ryan Epperson is another young guy who played quite a bit last year, and did a nice job. He is a different style of player than Jabara was but he has done everything we've asked him to do."
The Lumberjacks will step on the practice field Friday morning to officially close out the first week of practice. Saturday's scrimmage is slated to get under way at 7 p.m. and is free to the public.
