NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Damitria Buchanan has been named assistant women's basketball coach announced Brandon Schneider Tuesday afternoon. Buchanan replaces A'Quonesia Franklin who accepted an assistant coaching position at Kansas earlier this month.
"I'm extremely excited to have Damitria as a addition to our coaching staff," said Schneider. "As a player, her approach to academic performance, while being a major contributor on the court, is something all of our players should strive to emulate. She will be a terrific mentor for all of them. Damitria has very strong ties in one of our most important recruiting areas, and will be a great asset in developing our frontline players."
After receiving her bachelor's degree Texas A&M, Buchanan remained in the College Station area to pursue a master's degree while serving as a teacher and coach at A&M Consolidated Middle School. Each of the past four summers she has also served as a women's basketball camp coach at Texas A&M.
During her playing days, Buchanan helped guide the Aggies to three Big XII titles and four top-25 finishes, including top-10 finishes in each of her final three seasons. Buchanan was named team captain during her senior seasons, and was a two-time first-team All-Big XII selection.
