NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team set a new program record with their 5-2 win over Tarleton State Sunday at the Schlief Tennis Complex. The Ladyjacks are now 14-1 on the season, and have won five-straight matches.
The team's 14 wins ties a record set during the 2000 season when they went 14-12. The 2011 campaign also marks the first time SFA has won double figure matches since the 2000 season.
The Ladyjacks had a rough start to the morning dropping the doubles points. The duo of Ksenia Berestetska and Alice Pacaut, came off the court with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles but it was the Ladyjacks' lone doubles win. Alina Shazhko and Paola Montuenga faced a tough team at No. 1 doubles and were defeated in a close tiebreaker losing 9-8. Tarleton State got the doubles point winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.
"We came out slow again in doubles, which is something that we need to fix, but give credit to Tarleton for giving us all that we could handle," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "We had a little hangover from our emotional win against Sam Houston yesterday and today Tarleton came to play and really pushed us to the limit."
The Ladyjacks held nothing back as they dominated their way through singles play. SFA's first singles win came from No. 6, Ocanas, who was quickly followed by Enica with a perfect score of 6-0, 6-0. Enica's victory gave the Ladyjacks its first lead of the game. Shazhko came back after dropping the first set, 6-3, to win the next two. Montuenga followed by rallying in three sets for the win.
"I think that it's fitting that we would tie the record with a win like this because I think it is very typical of our team," Sullivan said. "We don't always win pretty, but we have six very tough kids that play hard and fight as long as it takes to get the job done. I'm very proud of them, and think that the entire SFA community should be as well."
