
SFA Places Four in Hammer Throw's Top 10

HOUSTON, Texas - Despite the fact the majority of their athletes don't begin competition until Saturday, the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams had several strong showings on the opening day of the Rice Bayou Classic in Houston.
Junior Jon Arthur led four Lumberjacks who finished among the top 10 in the men's hammer throw. Arthur finished third overall with a mark of 179-0, classmate Marcus Mitchell was eighth overall with a throw of 166-00. Junior Kyle Bishop recorded a throw of 160-9 to finish ninth while sophomore Jim Ed Hughes finished 10th overall (155-6).
Junior Harmon McClanahan just missed an individual title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase clocking a time of 9:25.88 to finish second overall. The SFA men also scored several points in the 5,000 meters. Xavier Rodriguez crossed the finish line with a time of 14:43.44 to finish fifth overall, while senior Dennis Yeats was eighth overall (14:56.73).
The freshman-senior combination of Lauren Smith and Megan Jenkins finished fifth-sixth in the women's 5,000 meters respectively, but were third and fourth fastest collegiate times in the race. Smith was fifth overall with a time of 17:13.28, and Jenkins recorded a 17:17.69. Amy Shackelford also jumped in the top 10 with her time of 17:25.86.
