The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team recorded a 6-1 win over rival Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon in Huntsville, Texas. The victory moves SFA to 13-1 on the season, and 4-1 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks entered the day in a two-way tie with the Bearkats for third place in the conference, but SFA broke the tie with an impressive victory.
"SFA has not beaten Sam Houston since 2001," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "So we wanted this one badly. I am especially proud of the seniors, who put the team on their backs after we came out slow and got swept in doubles. Andy (Enica) took care of business and got off the court first and (Megan Ocanas) clinched the match with a flawless third set. This was a strong performance in singles, and we showed a lot of heart from the whole team. This is a big win against a very good team."
The Ladyjacks fell behind early, 1-0, after dropping all three doubles matches. Senior Andrea Enica tied the match with a 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 5 singles. Junior Alina Shazhko gave SFA a 2-1 lead, an advantage it would not surrender. Senior Megan Ocanas clinched the victory when she recorded the fourth singles win of the day. Ocanas recorded a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday when they host Tarleton State. The match against the Texans is slated to begin at 11 a.m. from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
