NATCHITOCHES, La. - Monika Covington held Northwestern State to three hits and didn't allow an earned run as Stephen F. Austin banged out eight hits including a pair of home runs in a 4-1 win Sunday in the finale of their three-game Southland Conference series. The win gives SFA its first series victory in league play this season.
The Ladyjacks improve to 8-21 overall and 4-8 in Southland action, while Northwestern State falls to 16-12 on the year with a 4-5 conference record.
Amber Price gave Covington a lead to work with in the first inning when she homered with one out. The Ladyjacks added a run in the top of the second on Charlotte Singleton's RBI double. Jessica Arana, who had singled and stolen second, scored on the play.
The Demons got within a run in the fourth, when an infield error with two outs allowed Brianna Rodriguez to score from second.
SFA got that run back in the sixth. After a Northwestern error extended the inning, the Ladyjacks loaded the bases. Bethany Brown was then hit by a pitch, scoring pinch runner Nicole Wooten. Wooten was in the game running for Cadie Weaver who led off the inning with a single.
SFA added its final run in the seventh on an Elizabeth Arana home run to center field.
Covington (3-13) didn't allow a hit after the fourth inning and retired the Demons in order in the final three frames. In addition to the three hits, she issued one walk and struck out 10.
Singleton finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brown, Price, Elizabeth Arana, Weaver, Jessica Arana and Krista Hallmark each hit safely once.
SFA will return to action Wednesday when the Ladyjacks travel to Monroe, La., to take on ULM. The game against the Warhawks is set to begin at 5 p.m.
