ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington hit six second-half 3-pointers to force overtime, then outscored Stephen F. Austin, 7-6, in the extra period to take a 66-65 decision Wednesday in Texas Hall. The loss snapped a three-game SFA win streak.
The Lumberjacks (15-8, 6-5 Southland Conference) led by as many as 15 in the second half, but the Mavericks shot 51.7 percent after halftime to close the gap and hit 3-pointers on each of their last two possessions in regulation to turn what had been a six-point SFA lead with 1:31 to play into the Lumberjacks' first overtime game of the season.
In overtime, the `Jacks took a three-point lead (64-61) on a free throw by Eddie Williams with 1:50 to play, but Bo Ingram was fouled on a layup and converted the free throw to tie the score with 1:38 to play. Ingram knocked down a jumper on the Mavericks' next possession to put UTA ahead.
Williams missed a jumper on the next SFA touch, but Dion Prewster grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 16 seconds to play. He hit the second attempt to bring the `Jacks within a point.
UTA's Cameron Catlett then missed two free throws at the other end, giving SFA a chance to win the game on its last possession. Prewster got a look at the basket, but his attempt bounced off the rim. Jordan Glynn grabbed the offensive board and got one last look with time running out but couldn't convert.
Junior center Jereal Scott scored 19 points to lead all players but fouled out with 2:15 to play. Williams scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half and pulled down 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He added six assists and played all 45 minutes in the contest.
Ingram finished with 15 points to lead UTA. Shaquil White-Miller added 10.
SFA outrebounded the Mavericks, 44-34, but UTA finished with a 34-22 edge in the paint. The `Jacks pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and outscored UTA, 13-11, in second-chance points.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action Saturday, when SFA hosts Southland-leading Texas State. The game against the Bobcats is set for a 4:30 p.m. start from Johnson Coliseum.
