NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Jereal Scott tied a career high with 30 points and the Lumberjacks overcame a season high 21 turnovers in knocking off Texas College 64-57 on Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Scott was 11-of-19 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the line with nine rebounds, but was only joined in double figures by Antonio Bostic with 12 points as the Lumberjacks (5-4) shot just 39 percent from the field for the game, including just 4-for-15 from beyond the arc.
The Steers were able to capitalize on the 21 SFA miscues by turning them into 22 points and were led by big man LaDarren Williams with 16 points on the night.
Bostic added five assists and five rebounds to his total, and Darius Gardner had a career best seven assists, but it took a late run from SFA in the first half to finally distance itself from Texas College before withstanding a late push to hang on for its fifth win of the year.
Texas College as late as the 5:46 mark of the first half before Scott tied it up and put SFA ahead on consecutive baskets. Those buckets started an 11-2 SFA run over a four minute span that put SFA up by as much as seven points at 29-22 before going in to the locker room up 32-25, despite a dozen turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play.
It took SFA just five minutes into the second half to push the lead to its largest at 15 points as Scott was once again the catalyst early in the half, scoring six of SFA's first 13 points of the second period. Jonathan King and Taylor Smith also got in on the early action with buckets of their own, but the Steers made good at the free throw line and shortened the margin to just eight points on a layup from Jhirmetrius Cochran with seven minutes to play.
Texas College made things interesting down the stretch, getting to within just five points with less than a minute and a half to go; however, Desmond Haymon and Bostic made three of four from the line before Scott knocked in the final bucket to equal his career mark with under 10 seconds to go to ice the game.
SFA will next travel to the west coast for three games at the Global Hoops Showcase on the campus of the University of Oregon. The `Jacks will take on Prairie View A&M in the tournament opener, before batting North Carolina Central and Oregon on consecutive nights.
