BEAUMONT, Texas - The Ladyjacks dropped their final regular season match of the season on Saturday to Lamar, 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 18-25, 25-10) and will enter next week's Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 7 overall seed.
SFA (14-17, 7-9 SLC) was coming off a dramatic road win on Thursday at McNeese State that clinched a berth in the SLC Tournament, and entered the afternoon match needing a win to move up to either the No. 5 or 6 seed in the tournament; however, the Cardinals (11-20, 9-7 SLC) had other ideas and handed SFA its first loss in Beaumont since the 2002 season.
Lamar hit .187 for the match, and reeled off a 5-0 run late in the second set to steal a crucial set and take a 2-0 lead into the half. SFA managed to take the third set, but after hitting .414 in Set 3, hit just -.094 in the fourth set, committing nine attack errors to just six kills on its way to dropping its most lopsided set of the season.
Jill Ivy led SFA with 12 kills and two blocks, and Taylor Gross had nine kills but the Cardinals finished with four more blocks than SFA and hit .274 for the match with four players in double-figure kills. Paige Holland had 34 assists and 11 digs for her second consecutive double-double, and Katzy Randall and Melissa Miksch joined her with 11 and 10 digs respectively.
The Ladyjacks will take on No. 2 seeded UTSA in the first round of the SLC Tournament next Friday at the Farris Center in Conway, Ark., as the opening match of the tournament at 11:00 a.m.
