FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defensive end Willie Jefferson has been named Southland Conference defensive player of the week for his efforts Saturday against McNeese State announced league officials Monday morning. In addition to earning conference recognition, he was also named College Football Performance Awards Defensive Lineman of the Week, College Sporting News Defensive All-Star and the Beyond Sports Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Jefferson recorded five tackles in the contest, but made the most of every tackle. He finished the game with a school record 4.5 sacks for 31 yards in losses. The 4.5 sacks breaks the record set by former All-American Tim Knicky during the 2008 season, and was only 0.5 sack shy of the conference record. In addition to the sacks, Jefferson also picked off a pass in the end zone for a touchdown. It was the second time this season Jefferson has returned an interception for a score.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to take on Lamar. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium.
