HAMMOND, La. - Stephen F. Austin gave up more 3-pointers than it had allowed in more than a month, as Southeastern Louisiana took a 64-54 win Saturday at the University Center in the Southland Conference opener for both teams. The loss marks SFA's fifth consecutive defeat when opening league play on the road.
The Lumberjacks (9-4) shot 35 percent from the floor - their worst shooting performance of the season - while Southeastern Louisiana connected on 47 percent, marking the best effort by an SFA opponent since Texas Tech hit 52 percent on Nov. 19.
SFA shot just 30 percent in the opening period and went to halftime down, 27-22. The Lumberjacks trimmed the lead to two early in the second half, but Southeastern (7-6) mounted a quick 6-0 run to push its advantage back to eight.
Sophomore Antonio Bostic converted a three-point play when he was fouled on a jumper to bring it back to five, then hit a fast-break jumper to make it a three-point game (35-32) with 14:31 to play. The Lions answered with another run, outscoring SFA, 7-0, over the next two-plus minutes, to get the lead into double figures for the first time. The `Jacks didn't get closer than six the rest of the way.
Junior center Jereal Scott scored 15 points to lead SFA, and Bostic added 11, tying a career high. Freshman Desmond Haymon came off the bench to tie his career best with six points on a pair of 3-pointers. Seniors Jordan Glynn and Eddie Williams added six points apiece.
Glynn pulled down 10 rebounds for his third double-figure performance of the season, leading the `Jacks to a 35-28 advantage on the glass.
Trent Hutchin went 5-for-9 from 3-point range to lead Southeastern with 19 points. Fortenberry and David Ndoumba added 13 points apiece for the Lions.
The Lumberjacks return home to host Central Arkansas on Jan. 12. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
