NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack basketball team's incoming crop of players for the 2011-12 season is ranked as the 35th best incoming class in the country in a recent list published by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
The class includes five incoming freshmen and a pair of Division I transfers - Ashlee Mells and Annette Davis - to give SFA the only mention of any Southland Conference school on the 80-team list. The five teams ranked directly behind SFA include Ole Miss, San Diego State, Illinois, Oklahoma State and Clemson.
"As I said back in November, we are extremely excited about our recruiting class to this point of the year," head coach Brandon Schneider said. "Our assistant coaches have done an outstanding job of selling SFA, our tradition, and our vision to individuals we feel will immediately improve our program and enable us to compete at a high level. Our work is not yet finished, as we plan to add 2 to 3 more players in the spring signing period."
Dan Olson, the publisher of the magazine, had a pair of new Ladyjacks in his top 100 players, and four of which landed in the top 300. Incoming freshman Ashley Bettis, a 5-8 combo guard from Channelview, is Olson's 76th ranked prospect in the nation and was the 36th ranked player in the state of Texas when she signed in November.
Mells is listed at number 87 on the list, while Kansas transfer Davis came in at 177. Guard Kyaris Johnson of Mansfield Legacy High School outside of Arlington was also listed inside the top 300, with Daylyn Harris, Tierney Henderson and point guard Brittney Matthew rounding out the class.
