KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Stephen F. Austin got out to a slow start but rallied for four wins to hold its ground Saturday on Day 2 of the Kutztown Invitational. The Ladyjacks went 4-2 in six standard-format games and are the No. 7 team in the 28-team tournament going into Sunday's final action.
SFA dropped games against New Jersey City and Maryland Eastern Shore to start the day. But the Ladyjacks came on strong to knock off Medaille, Long Island, Bethune-Cookman and SUNY IT in succession.
"We had some big individual performances today, and that translated into a solid all-around day as a team," SFA head coach Laura Cramer said. "I'm really excited to see what we can do tomorrow with this momentum."
Sophomore Dustie Hammond averaged a team-best 212 over six games - her best single-day performance of the year - and finished ninth in total pinfall among individual bowlers with a cumulative score of 1,273.
"Dustie was amazing today," Cramer said. "She really stepped up and gave us a great performance. This is by far her best tournament as a Ladyjack."
Sophomore Sierra Gibbons averaged 196.5 and finished 28th in individual pinfall. Sophomore Whitney McCoy bowled the last three games of the day and averaged 218, including a new SFA single-game record against Long Island.
"Sierra had a really solid day for us," Cramer said, "and Whitney came in mid-day and provided a great spark down the stretch."
In the opener against New Jersey City, SFA dropped a narrow decision, 984-975. Gibbons led the Ladyjacks with a 222, and sophomore Ashli Rosenkranz rolled a 204. Hammond bowled a 191, and Madison Williams and Nicole Parkhurst each put up a 179.
The Ladyjacks followed with a 1091-896 loss against Maryland Eastern Shore. Hammond and Parkhurst each broke 200, bowling 211 and 205, respectively. But no other SFA bowler broke 165.
SFA got its first win of the day against Medaille, notching a 921-783 decision. Gibbons paced the Ladyjacks with a 209, and Hammond rolled a 202. Parkhurst turned in a 182, Williams put up a 166 and Rosenkranz finished with a 162.
Against Long Island, SFA notched a 1035-997 victory, thanks largely to McCoy, who finished one pin shy of a chance for a perfect game. She posted strikes through the first 10 frames, then left one pin standing on her first ball of the 11th. She picked up the spare to finish with a 289 - a personal record in sanctioned competition - the best single-game score ever by a Ladyjack bowler. Hammond put up a 202. Gibbons rolled a 196, Parkhurst tallied a 191 and Rosenkranz turned in a 157.
In the fifth game of the day, SFA took a 993-836 verdict over Bethune-Cookman. Hammond and McCoy led the way with scores of 214 and 213, respectively. Parkhurst rolled a 194, Christi Nedved posted a 189 and Gibbons bowled a 183.
Hammond booked her best score of the day in the finale against SUNY IT, rolling a 253. Gibbons posted a 205, and Parkhurst rolled a 174. McCoy finished up with a 153, and Nedved bowled a 107.
SFA goes into Sunday's play as the No. 7 overall team. The final day's action will consist of a bracket played out in best of seven baker matches.
