KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack bowling team posted its best performance of the season Friday on the opening day of the Kutztown Invitational. SFA was a perfect 6-0 and goes into Saturday seeded fifth of 28 teams.
SFA picked up wins against Hampton, Cheyney, North Carolina Central, Monmouth, Long Island and St. Francis of Pennsylvania. Friday's action consisted of quad-Baker matches determined by total pinfall.
"It was an awesome day," head coach Laura Cramer said. "The whole team came together today to contribute to the wins."
The Ladyjacks opened on a hot streak, defeating Hampton, 763-651, then knocked off Cheyney, 941-546. SFA won all eight individual games in its first two matches, and the 941 pins dropped against Cheyney marked the highest series total in the tournament. The Ladyjacks bowled a 290 in the third game against Cheyney, setting a new season-high for a Baker-format game.
SFA cooled slightly in its third match, dropping the last two games against North Carolina Central. But the Ladyjacks had built a solid lead with a 220-129 verdict in the opener and held on for a 738-675 win in the series.
The Ladyjacks dropped a narrow decision to Monmouth in the first game of the next match, but followed it with three straight wins to cruise to a 763-660 verdict.
In the fifth match, against Long Island, SFA broke 200 in three of the four games to roll to an 809-677 victory. The Ladyjacks wrapped up their day by taking four straight games against St. Francis of Pennsylvania for an 803-610 win.
SFA will resume action Saturday with six standard team games. The Ladyjacks go into play as the No. 5 team with a total pinfall of 4,817. For live coverage of Saturday's play visit the Kutztown athletics website at kubears.com.
