FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin junior Jordan King has been named the Southland Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, according to a Tuesday announcement by league officials. The honor is the first of King's career and marks the first player of the week award earned by a Ladyjack this season.
King helped lead the Ladyjacks to a split in two home games over the weekend. UTEP squeaked out a 2-1 overtime win Friday night, then SFA took a 3-1 verdict over Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday.
In Friday's game, King helped bolster a defensive unit that played the final 37 minutes of regulation without one of its leaders. Senior captain Kelli Barnes was issued a red card in the 52nd minute, leaving SFA a man down for the remainder of the contest. King and the defense rallied, holding UTEP without a shot on goal for the balance of the second half. The Miners would eventually get the game-winner on a rebounded shot off the crossbar in overtime.
Sunday, King's offensive abilities were the difference-maker. She set a school record by connecting for two penalty kick goals in the first half, the second of which proved to be the game-winner against the Ragin' Cajuns. They were the first two goals of her Ladyjack career.
In all, King has started and played every minute of every contest this season. She was a mainstay in the SFA backfield a season ago, when she was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year.
SFA will be back in action on the road this weekend. The Ladyjacks play at Houston on Friday night, then take on Houston Baptist Sunday afternoon.
