NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjacks took the first set and got 13 kills apiece from MC Bottles and Kelsey Owens, but the UTSA Roadrunners rallied to steal the next three frames, as well as the match for a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-17) road win at Johnson Coliseum.
It was the first time since 2000 that the `Runners (8-9, 2-1) have won a match in Nacogdoches after SFA (9-10, 1-2) had won 18 of the last 19 in the series.
Besides Owens and Bottles, no Ladyjack managed more than Arielle Daron's eight kills despite SFA rejecting 11 Roadrunner shots. Laurel Kuepker led SFA from her setting spot with 22 assists and moved into SFA's all-time top 10 in digs with seven balls kept alive.
Madison Hanlan and Melissa Miksch were the only ones to reach double-figure digs with 14 and 10 apiece, respectively. Bottles added six blocks to her 13 kills and Allison Gideon had a hand in five, along with two kills and 16 assists.
SFA hit .237 in the first set in taking an early 1-0 lead, but only .147 in the final three sets while UTSA hit no lower than .278 in either of the match's final two frames.
After the teams traded sets before the break, the third set proved to be a momentum swing after UTSA fought off three set-point tries before getting one of Kendra Rowland's match-high 14 kills to set up a set-point opportunity of its own and forcing a Ladyjack attack error to steal the set.
From there the `Runners took off, keeping the momentum going jumping out to a 10-4 lead in the final frame and never leading by less than three while SFA helped the UTSA cause with nine attack errors of its own in the set.
The Ladyjacks next see the floor at home on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
