Coming off their impressive 59-14 victory over Albany at home, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team looks to make it two in a row as it travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take on the 13th-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers. Saturday's contest will mark the Lumberjacks first game against an FCS top-25 opponent this season. The game is slated to begin at 4:05 p.m. from the UNI Dome. SFA vs. the PANTHERS: Saturday's meeting will mark the eighth contest between the two schools, with Northern Iowa holding a 5-2 (.714) advantage in the series. The Lumberjacks haven't had much success in Cedar Falls, recording a 1-3 (.250) all-time record in the UNI Dome, but the team's lone road win in the series came during their last trip when SFA recorded a 24-21 win (2004). SFA vs. the TOP 25: The Lumberjacks are 19-28 (.404) against teams ranked in the FCS top-25 polls dating back to 1995, but the 'Jacks turned their fortunes around last season. After going 0-8 in the two previous season against ranked teams, SFA won its first three games against ranked foes in 2009. SFA's lone loss to a ranked opponent came against eventual national finalist Montana in the second round of the FCS playoffs. CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Senior Jeremy Moses continues to climb the ladder of the Southland Conference record books. The conference's all-time leader in completions, Moses is currently second all-time touchdown passes (91), second in passing yards (9,887) and fifth in yards of total offense (9,647). He needs only 10 more TD passes, 672 yards passing, and 1,347 yards of total offense to set new league records in each of those categories. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: The Lumberjacks used just about every avenue possible to score a touchdown in the victory over Albany. Following Gralyn Crawford's opening kickoff return which he carried 92 yards for a score, the SFA offense added four touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. Crawford returned to the game in the second half to return a punt 72 yards for a score. The Lumberjack defense also got in the act as junior Devin Ducote picked off a pass and returned it 18 yards for the touchdown. The only touchdown SFA didn't record in the victory over the Great Danes was a fumble returned for a score. SPECIAL TEAMS LIVING UP TO THEIR NAME: The SFA special teams were dominant in the win over Albany. The 'Jacks returned a kick and a punt for a touchdown, converted a two-point conversion, and blocked a punt which set up another SFA score. UTEP transfer Logan Barrett was perfect on all six extra-point attempts, and converted his first field goal attempt (28 yards) in a Lumberjack uniform. THE COACHES: J.C. Harper became the 18th head coach of the SFA Lumberjack football team in December 2006, following two seasons as the team's defensive coordinator. Harper was named the 2009 SLC Coach of the Year after guiding SFA to it's first conference crown in 10 years. The title came only two years following an 0-11 season. Harper is 15-23 (.395) in three seasons as a head coach. Mark Farley is in his 10th season with the Northern Iowa Panthers. During his time in Cedar Falls, the Panthers have remained a national power on the FCS level. The 2007 Eddie Robinson Award winner, Farley has posted an 83-32 (.722) all-time record. He has also led the team to at least a share of five conference titles, and eight of his nine team's have finished ranked among the top 25. |
