NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team took to the practice field Saturday afternoon to record its first practice of the 2010 season. Saturday's practice was the first of 23 scheduled workouts prior to normal game week preparations.
"Our primary focus during camp is to stay healthy, and get better with each workout," said head coach J.C. Harper following a team meeting Friday morning. "We are also looking to see which newcomers will be able to provide immediate help."
There are a ton of expectations surrounding the 'Jacks for the 2010 season. SFA is unanimous pick to repeat as conference champions in a preseason poll taken of league head coaches and sports information directors at last week's SLC Media Days.
A lot of that attention has surrounded senior quarterback Jeremy Moses and senior linebacker Jabara Williams. The owner of numerous school records, Moses is a member of the Walter Payton Award Watch list, while Williams has been named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch list, an award given annually to FCS' top defensive player.
"The individual stuff doesn't really mean all that much to me," said Moses. "This school has never had back-to-back conference titles before, and I want to be a part of the senior class that helps get that done for SFA. If we don't do that, then in my opinion we failed."
Lumberjack fans will have their first opportunity to see the 2010 version of the SFA football team Saturday, Aug. 14, when SFA host its first of two scrimmages. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium and will begin at 7 p.m.
