NACOGDOCHES, Texas - As with many positions during the 2009 season, the running backs were a solid group loaded with talent and depth. SFA was blessed to have two returning seniors, each with different strengths, and an exciting rookie with a huge upside. After a magical run to the Southland Conference title and a trip to the FCS playoffs, attrition has given the SFA backfield a completely new look.
Last year's exciting rookie has become this year's veteran despite his sophomore status. Add to that a speedster from San Augustine who is coming off a redshirt season, a prep standout and the Lumberjacks are excited about the future in the backfield. But what SFA lacks in experience will be up for with plenty of talented options to choose from in 2010. Running backs coach Cody Fredenburg believes this year's group has a chance to surpass the 2009 crop of backs despite its overall youth.
"Obviously, experience is a big deal," said Fredenburg, who is entering his first full season with the Lumberjack coaching staff. "But based on watching game film from last season, I think this group is more talented. Romonté (Hampton) played in 10 games last season and Jeremy Barnes might just be the fastest guy on the team. So we might be lacking in experience, but we're definitely talented,
"The one thing I've really been impressed with early is the work ethic of this group. Romonté sets the tone, and the rest of the guys follow his lead," added Fredenburg.
Hampton is the team's top returning rusher and has a definite edge on the competition due to his experience. Last season he finished third on the team with 71 carries for 324 yards (4.6 ypc) and four touchdowns. Although he was third on the depth chart Hampton made the most of his opportunities in 2009, and showed signs of being able to carry the load on a full-time basis. Hampton brings breakaway speed to the 'Jacks' lineup, but isn't afraid of a little contact.
"With such a young squad, you're looking for someone to take on a leadership role," said Fredenburg. "Romonté has become that guy, not so much for what he says but for what he does. His actions in practice speak volumes. Romonté goes full speed on every rep. The other guys see that, and understand how hard they need to work."
Barnes brings pure speed to the backfield. A member of the 2008 signing class, Barnes came to SFA as a defensive back from San Augustine. Following the '08 campaign, Barnes was moved from the secondary to the backfield. He redshirted last season to focus on learning the offense. Barnes' speed provides SFA's already high-scoring offense with yet another weapon.
"One of the best qualities about Jeremy is his ability to keep everyone loose," said Fredenburg. "He is a real fun guy to be around. He has earned the respect of his teammates. But on the field, Jeremy's speed is his best asset. He has the ability to turn small plays into big gains based on his speed."
Another player who could figure into the mix is 6-0, 190-pound incoming freshman Daleon Sinette. A standout for Port Arthur Memorial, Sinette may be the low man on the totem pole in terms of overall experience but he has the talent to eventually find his way onto the field.
