NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior Camelia Sams and sophomore Nick McCloud were named 2010 team MVPs announced Stephen F. Austin head track and field coach Phil Olson Wednesday morning.
"Camelia and Nick were simply outstanding this season," said Olson. "Camelia had a breakout season during the indoor championships, winning both horizontal jumps and being named the meet's outstanding field event performer. She followed that up with a fine outdoor conference meet, where she picked up points in the long jump and finished second in the triple jump. She also was within striking distance of scoring in the short sprints.
"Nick had a superlative sophomore season, making it to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and finishing runner-up at the Texas Relays. His two titles in the short hurdles at both the indoor and outdoor championships as well as his scoring well in the 200 was a difference maker for our team title chase. I am proud of both of them for competing at the highest levels and for representing SFA with dignity and class," added Olson.
Sams was key in guiding SFA to Southland Conference titles at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. The Ladyjacks have now swept the indoor and outdoor titles each of the past two seasons.
A seven-time All-SLC selection, Sams was named the SLC Indoor Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year after dominating the jumps events this past season. She won both the long and triple jump events at the meet, and became the school record holder in the long jump. Sams added an all-conference finish in the triple jump, and as a member of the women's 400-meter relay team during the outdoor season.
McCloud followed up an impressive rookie season by adding to his résumé in 2010. The 2009 SLC Indoor Freshman of the Year guided the 'Jacks to runner-up finishes during the indoor and outdoor season.
A two-time SLC Athlete of the Week and six-time All-SLC selection, McCloud won his first SLC individual title during the indoor season when he clocked a time of 7.95 in the 60-meter hurdles. He followed that up by taking the 110-meter hurdle title at the conference outdoor championships and advanced to the NCAA meet where he placed among the nation's top 24. He also added an all-conference honor in the 200-meter dash during the indoor season.
