NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team wrapped up its sixth of 15 schedule spring workouts Friday morning. Saturday's practice will mark the midway point of the 2010 spring calendar.
"Practice has been going well," said head coach J.C. Harper. "To be honest, we've picked up right where we left off. We are getting a lot of reps offensively, and our defense really seems to be flying around and getting after it. Jordan Aubrey really looks strong at corner, and we have a very strong group of linebackers."
Although the Lumberjacks were a fairly young team in 2009, they enter offseason workouts with some questions to answer. SFA took heavy hits at several positions due to attrition, including receiver, running back, offensive line and defensive end. Despite the losses, there is no sense of panic around the Lumberjack locker room but confidence.
At each of these positions, SFA has young, talented players who have fought their way up the depth chart. The loss of players like Tim Knicky and Andre Hicks would cause most coaches many sleepless nights, but it is a little different scenario for Harper and company. SFA is blessed to be returning several experienced players at the position. That, along with the move of senior Kenneth Charles from the interior has given Harper reason to smile about the 2010 season.
"Defensively, we have really seen a lot of good things," said Harper. "I really believe if you put No. 51 on Fincher, no one would know Knicky is gone. He has done a tremendous job. We've also moved Kenneth (Charles) outside, and that gives us two really good defensive ends. They are going to be a lot of fun to watch play.
"Rainey (Sternes) is another guy who has been around our program for along time, and he has the talent to be a starter for us. I'm really pleased about the talent we have here," added Harper.
The Lumberjacks will finish spring workouts Saturday, April 24th with the annual spring scrimmage. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
