NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football program altered its spring schedule Saturday, and held a scrimmage one week before the annual spring game. Head coach J.C. Harper, the 2009 Southland Conference Coach of the Year was pleased with what he observed.
"We ran approximately 100 plays today, and I was really proud of what we saw," said Harper. "Our younger guys did a good job of executing today. The defense was really fun to watch. We put a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks, and caused a lot of problems up front.
Junior Dalton Williams worked out with the ones completing 16-of-25 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown. The SFA defense stepped up to pick off Williams twice. Redshirt freshman Brady Attaway was 20-of-25 for 115 yards and one touchdown. The Whitehouse native was also picked off once. Freshman Garrett Riley completed 13-of-25 passes for 165 yards and a TD. The SFA defense picked off three passes on the day.
"We lost our two starters at defensive end from last year, but I was very happy with the play of Rainey Sternes and Kenneth Charles. They made a lot of plays today. We also moved Darren Robinson from linebacker to defensive end. I really believe the sky is the limit for him," added Harper.
Sophomore Gralyn Crawford has picked up where left off in the fall. He hauled in five passes for 120 and one TD. One of his receptions Crawford took for 70 yards. Junior Garret Williams made six grabs for 55 yards, while Anthony Foster caught six passes for 55 yards and a score.
The SFA running backs finished the day with 14 rushes for 80 yards. The group also proved their ability to catch the ball out of the backfield hauling in nine passes for 60 yards. The offense recorded four scores on the day, including three through the air.
The Lumberjacks will hold their annual spring game Saturday, April 24th at Homer Bryce Stadium. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
