KATY, Texas - Despite 23 points from senior Whitney Cormier the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were unable to stop a hot shooting Northwestern State team in the opening round of the 2010 State Farm Southland Conference Championships. The Lady Demons recorded a 96-82 win over No. 2 seed SFA Tuesday afternoon at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The loss drops SFA to 18-10 on the season.
The game was a matchup of two teams headed different directions. The Ladyjacks entered the tournament winners of their last seven games to lock up a share of the conference title, while Northwestern State lost four of five, and seven of their last nine heading into the tournament. It appeared to be the status quo early in the game as the Ladyjacks hit five of their first 10 shots to take an eight-point lead. But after the juniors Jordan Ford and Toni Davis picked up two quick fouls and were replaced in the lineup, the Lady Demons went on a 19-6 run and never looked back.
The Ladyjacks struggled from the floor hitting 32 of a conference-tournament record 92 (.348) attempts, and were outrebounded, 55-53. While the SFA offense was struggling to find the range Northwestern State took advantage. The Lady Demons connected on 47 percent of their shots, which included nine three-pointers.
SFA finished the game with four players in double figures. Along with Cormier's team-high 23, junior Ebony Alexander added 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomores Tammara Marion and Schera Sampson each added 10.
The Ladyjacks will now have sit and wait for the outcome of the conference tournament to see if their season will continue. If Lamar wins the SLC tournament, the Ladyjacks will play in the WNIT.
