NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The 2010 Southland Conference Co-Champions, and No. 2 seed Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will set it sights on the State Farm SLC tournament title, and the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. SFA opens the conference tournament Tuesday against No. 7 seed Northwestern State. The game against the Lady Demons is slated to begin at noon from the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
The Ladyjacks are the league's hottest team entering the tournament on a seven-game win streak. SFA looked like it might get caught in the midst of conference logjam three weeks ago, but the Ladyjacks were able to create some separation, and catch Lamar, with some thrilling wins down the stretch.
The Ladyjacks (18-9/13-3 SLC) will have history on their side when they face Northwestern State. The Ladyjacks are a perfect 8-0 all-time against Northwestern State in the conference tournament. While SFA has dominated the all-time series against the Lady Demons, the two teams split the season series with each team winning on the other's home floor.
The Ladyjacks will be looking to end a two-game slide in conference tournament opening round games, having dropped the previous two tournament openers to Lamar. The last time SFA opened with the first game of the tournament (2007) they advanced to the SLC Championship game. Tuesday's game will mark the first time in the past five seasons that SFA has not opened the conference tournament against Lamar.
