FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team sent several athletes to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Arkansas Final Qualifier. It is the team's last opportunity to improve its national event rankings before the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Junior Camelia Sams, the 2010 Southland Conference Indoor Outstanding Female Athlete, competed in the long and triple jump. She posted a 10th-place finish in both events. In the long jump she recorded a mark of 18-9.75, while posting a jump of 39-0.25 in the triple jump.
Senior Kaitlyn Andrews also competed in two events Friday. Andrews recorded a throw of 47-7.25 to finish third in the shot put. She was second in the weight throw with a mark of 43-0.25. Andrews was beat out by classmate Frednisha Marshall in the weight throw. Marshall posted a throw of 64-3.25 to win the event. Senior Matt Langdon was third in the men's weight throw with a mark of 63-1.50.
Sophomore Nick McCloud was the lone track athlete that SFA sent to Fayetteville. After posting a school-record time of 7.89 to qualify for the finals of the men's 60-meter hurdles, McCloud improved up his time in the finals to earn runner-up honors. McCloud shaved four one-hudredths of a second off his preliminary to time to place second overall.
