KATY, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will be gunning for its second straight NCAA Tournament berth Saturday when the `Jacks take on Sam Houston State in the championship game of the State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start from the Merrell Center in Katy and will be televised live on ESPN2.
Saturday will mark SFA's fourth overall appearance in the Southland championship game - all four under head coach Danny Kaspar. The first title game showing was against Sam Houston State in 2003. The Bearkats pulled off a 69-66 overtime win in Huntsville in that match-up. The teams have met in the tournament twice since then. The following season, SFA took an 85-53 victory in a first-round game in Nacogdoches, then Sam Houston knocked the Lumberjacks out in the semifinals of the 2006 tournament with a 78-72 verdict in Huntsville.
Tickets are still available for purchase at the Merrell Center or online at Ticketmaster. General admission tickets are $10, and reserved seating tickets are $15. SFA students gain free admission by presenting their student ID at the designated SFA ticket booth.
The SFA Alumni Association will sponsor numerous opportunities for alumni and fans across the state to gather in support of the Lumberjacks. Houston area alumni and fans and students who make the trip to Katy will get the chance to join in a pre-game rally in front of the Merrell Center, scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. The first 100 Lumberjack fans in attendance will receive a free T-shirt.
In addition to the on-site festivities, the Alumni Association will sponsor local chapter watch parties in several Texas cities. For more information on the pre-game rally and watch parties, click here to visit the SFA Alumni Association Web site.
