The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team was one of the most improved teams in the country during the 2009 season. According to the Somis Sports rating system, the `Jacks were the nation's second-most improved NCAA Division-I FCS team in the country.
Among the 15-team field the Lumberjacks were the only team with a six-game turnaround compared to the 2008 season. SFA was also the only Southland Conference school on the list.
Somis Sports also released its 2009 most improved teams at any level, and the Lumberjacks ranked 36th nationally on that list. SFA recorded the fourth-best turnaround at the NCAA Division-I level. The `Jacks finished tied for second nationally with a six-game turnaround from a year ago, finishing second to only SMU (7).
The Lumberjacks posted a 10-3 record this past season to win a share of the Southland Conference Championship, and advance to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs for the first time since 1995. SFA posted double-digit wins following a 4-8 campaign in 2008, and are just two years removed from an 0-11 campaign.
