The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team (13-9/8-3 SLC) will be looking to tie a season-high three-game win streak when Southeastern Louisiana comes to town Saturday. The Ladyjacks, who have won four of their last five, have had a week to prepare for their divisional rivals. SFA enters the week in a two-way tie for first in the SLC East, while Southeastern Louisiana is 10-14 overall and 4-7 in the SLC East, four games back of SFA. The Lady Lions have dropped three of their last four and are coming off a 74-64 setback against Texas-Arlington. Saturday's game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA vs. the Lady Lions: The Ladyjacks are 23-2 (.920) all-time against Southeastern Louisiana. The Ladyjacks have now won six straight in the series which includes a 14-point victory in Hammond last month.
Home Sweet Home: The Ladyjacks are one of the nation's all-time winningest teams at home, with a 377-99 (.797) all-time record. SFA has won 46 of its last 60 games in the coliseum. The Ladyjacks are currently 6-2 (.750) at home this season.
Ladyjack Academic Shootout: The annual Ladyjack Academic Shootout is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20, when SFA hosts Southeastern Louisiana. Fans can pledge a certain amount per point, or a flat rate. The money goes to support the Ladyjacks' summer school scholarship fund. A pledge will be set up at the front gate of the coliseum prior to every home game.
Night Full of Promotions: Along with the Ladyjack Academic Shootout, Saturday's game will also be the annual Pink Zone game on the SFA campus. The Pink Zone game is done to help raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Fans wearing pink will receive free admission to the game. Lumberjack Alley will be available to fans on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 3:30 p.m. Saturday's game will also serve as the annual Take a Kid to the Game, where children 14 and under will receive free admission.
POTW: Senior Whitney Cormier was named SLC Player of the Week after leading SFA to wins at Northwestern State and McNeese State. For the week, Cormier averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals. It marks the second time this season that Cormier has received the honor.
Heating Up: Senior Whitney Cormier has been on fire since joining the Ladyjack 1,000-point club. Since that time she is averaging 22 points per game, including a season-high 25 against Lamar.
Calling in the Reserves: Junior Chantol Drennan was a key figure in the Ladyjacks win at Northwestern State. Drennan came off the bench to score a season-high 10 points and pull down three rebounds in 10 minutes of action.
Arc Angels: SFA enters the week with 159 triples with five games still remaining. The Ladyjacks rank 26th in the nation averaging 7.2 threes per contest. The Ladyjack single-season record of 179 was set during the 2005-06 season. SFA needs to average 4.0 threes per game the rest of the way to break the current mark.
Dominating Defense: The Ladyjacks held Northwestern State to only 17 first-half points Wednesday in Natchitoches, La. That is the lowest halftime score recorded against an SFA squad since holding Southeastern Louisiana to 16 points during the 2007-08 season. The Ladyjacks also held SLU to 18 first-half points last season.
Taking Care of the Ball: The Ladyjacks have done a much better job of holding onto the basketball over the course of the past three games. SFA is averaging only 12 turnovers per game during that stretch, including a season-low seven against McNeese State. It marks the second time this season that SFA has turned the ball over fewer than 10 times in a game.
Like Thieves in the Night: The Ladyjacks have produced one of the most dominating defenses in the country this season. The Ladyjacks are currently ranked 12th in the nation averaging 11.5 steals per game. SFA is also ranked among the nation's top 15 in turnover margin (5.77).
Being Offensive: The Ladyjacks offense is starting to gain some recognition across the nation. The Ladyjacks are currently ranked 14th in the nation averaging 77.7 points per contest. The Ladyjacks have scored at least 90 points in a game four times this season.
Millennium Club: Senior Whitney Cormier joined an exclusive club earlier this season. With her ninth point against Nicholls, Cormier became the 24th Ladyjack in school history with 1,000 career points.
Up Next ... SFA returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Texas State. The Ladyjacks will then be on the road Saturday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, to take on the Islanders.
