NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin shot a season-high 59.5 percent from the field Saturday on the way to a 69-56 win against McNeese State in Johnson Coliseum. That effort helped the Lumberjacks overcome their second rebounding deficit in the last three games and stay unbeaten in home Southland Conference play.
The `Jacks move to 18-6 overall with an East Division-leading 8-3 record against Southland teams. The Cowboys (8-16, 3-7 SLC) suffered their third consecutive loss and fall to 3-11 on the road.
SFA built a big lead early by holding the Cowboys to 19 percent shooting in the first half. McNeese State was just 4-for-21 from the field in the first 20 minutes and went to the locker room facing a 25-12 deficit. The 12 points are the fewest allowed by SFA in the first half this season and the fewest points issued in the first period of a game at Johnson Coliseum since the `Jacks held Central Arkansas to seven last season.
The Cowboys upped their shooting to 53 percent after the break, but SFA went 11-for-17 from the field in the second period and earned 26 of its 30 free throws after halftime to hold McNeese off. SFA led by as many as 15 in the game, and the margin was never fewer than eight points in the second half.
Sophomore center Jereal Scott went 3-for-3 from the field and 9-of-12 at the stripe in the second period, when he scored 15 of his game-high 18 points. Scott added eight rebounds to lead all players. Junior forward Jordan Glynn also had a strong second-half showing, hitting all three of his field goal attempts and going 3-of-4 at the stripe. He finished with 11 points. Junior guard Eddie Williams scored 14 points to round out the Lumberjack double-figure scorers.
Patrick Richard scored 14 points to lead the Cowboys, but no other McNeese starter broke double digits. Will Morning and Dontae Cannon came off the bench to score 10 apiece. Diego Kapelan, who came into the game averaging 12.7 points and three 3-pointers per contest, was held to nine points and a 1-for-5 effort from 3-point range. His was McNeese's only 3-pointer in 10 attempts.
At the other end of the floor, junior guard Austin Falke tied a career-high with two 3-pointers, making the most of his 26 minutes of action in place of ailing starter Walt Harris, who sat out the game. Senior point guard Eric Bell played one of his best games of the season, finishing with eight points on 2-of-3 shooting and six assists with three steals.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 20, when they travel to Hammond, La., to take on Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lions is set for a 3 p.m. tip.
