LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team recorded a big win over a scrappy McNeese State team Saturday in Lake Charles, La. After trailing by one at halftime, SFA rallied for an 85-75 victory. The Ladyjacks improve to 13-9 on the year, and 8-3 in SLC play.
The Ladyjacks owned seven-point lead early despite the fact they were being outshot by McNeese State. The Cowgirls were hurt by nine turnovers in the first 9:30 of the game, but they settled down not committing a turnover over the next 4:10. The Cowgirls' ability to hold onto the ball and their advantage on the glass helped McNeese State claim its first lead of the game. Behind an 11-rebound advantage on the glass, 30-19, and a 12-5 advantage in second chance points, McNeese State was able to push its' lead to seven points.
But where McNeese State found an advantage on the glass, SFA found an advantage with their defense. The Ladyjacks forced McNeese State into 12 first-half turnovers, which they converted into 14 points. The Ladyjacks only turned the ball over three times in the opening half.
The game remained close throughout the second half. With only a two-point lead, sophomore Tammara Marion was called for a technical foul, a foul which seemed to light a spark for the SFA defense. SFA responded by going on an 11-3 run taking a 10-point lead. The Cowgirls never seriously threatened after that.
SFA finished the game shooting 37 percent from the floor, while holding McNeese State to a 35-percent clip. The Cowgirls won the battle on the boards, 56-40, but the Ladyjacks overcame that by forcing their hosts into 19 turnovers which they cashed for 20 points. SFA only turned the ball over seven times in the game.
SFA finished the game with four players in double figures, led by senior Whitney Cormier's 19 points. Junior Toni Davis added 15 points, while Marion added 12. The Cowgirls were led by Kiara Johnson's 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday, Feb. 20, when they host Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lady Lions is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
