PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Five Lumberjacks have been named to the Sports Network FCS All-America team announced executive director Craig Haley. SFA placed one athlete on the first team, with a potential second first-team selection coming following the announcement of the 2010 Walter Payton Award. SFA also had one second-team honoree, and two third-team selections.
Sophomore receiver Gralyn Crawford earned first-team honors as a return specialist. A Walter Camp All-America selection, received first-team all-purpose player honors Wednesday. A two-way threat for the Lumberjacks in 2010, Crawford was recognized as one of the top receivers in the conference. He earned first-team all-conference honors from the H receiver spot, and as a return specialist. Crawford hauled in a team-high 74 receptions for 981 yards and five touchdowns in 2010.
Crawford finished the year ninth in the country averaging better than 28 yards per return. He also tied for tops in the nation with three kickoffs returned for scores. He also returned one punt for a touchdown. A multiple recipient of conference and national special teams player of the week awards, Crawford's most outstanding performance came during the second week of the season when he returned a kick and a punt for touchdowns against Albany.
Classmate Cordell Roberson garnered his first All-America honor with a second-team selection. Roberson finished sixth in the league with 61 catches, but led the league with 1,011 receiving yards and 16 touchdown receptions. A first-team All-Southland Conference selection, Roberson was one of only 13 players to record at least 1,000 yards receiving and led the nation with his 16 touchdown receptions.
The Lumberjack defense was represented on the third team by seniors Jabara Williams and Kenneth Charles. A three-time first-team All-SLC selection, and the 2010 SLC Defensive Player of the Year selection, Williams closed out his SFA career by finishing second on the team and fifth in the conference with 108 total tackles. A Buck Buchanan Award recipient each of the past two seasons, Williams was also credited for 6.5 tackles for losses, 1.5 sacks, four pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and an interception.
Charles was moved from his interior lineman spot to end prior to the start of the 2010 season, and immediately received preseason All-America hype. Charles backed up the preseason accolades with his performance on the field. A first-team all-conference selection, Charles recorded 65 tackles and led the league in tackles for losses (19.5) and sacks (11.5). Both marks placed among the nation's top 20. Charles also forced four fumbles on the season.
Quarterback Jeremy Moses could still earn first, second or third-team honors. The Sports Network will wait until the announcement of the Walter Payton Award voting on Jan. 6, to announce it's first-team quarterback.
