SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Ladyjacks hit .229 for the match, but still dropped their final road match of the season on Saturday, falling 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21) at the Convocation Center to league-leading UTSA.
UTSA (19-9, 13-1) remains in a tie with Central Arkansas atop the Southland Conference with the win, while the Ladyjacks (11-18, 4-10) will need to win their remaining two matches and get help from both Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls to avoid missing the SLC Tournament for the first time.
Arielle Daron led the Ladyjacks with 18 kills and MC Bottles had 16, while Melissa Miksch continued her steady play from the libero spot with 22 digs with Monica Pannone and Kelsey Owens also registering double figure digs.
Allison Gideon had 37 assists in directing SFA to its highest attack percentage in eight matches
SFA was efficient in the first set with a .257 attack percentage, but the Roadrunners came out on fire themselves, hitting .386 behind 20 kills as a team to jump out to a 1-0 lead; however, the Ladyjacks stormed back with an all-around attack in to even things up in the second frame. SFA got four aces and a block to go along with 17 kills, while holding the `Runners to just 13 kills on 34 swings as a team entering the half.
But the third set was all UTSA from beginning to end with the `Runners hitting .419 compared to just .029 by the Ladyjacks in to get them one set from a win with the 25-12 edge.
SFA got five kills in the final set from Bottles, and was even able to build a 19-13 lead before the `Runners put together a 7-0 spurt to take a 20-19 lead and eventually end the match behind .366 hitting in the fourth set, despite SFA swinging at a .349 mark.
The Ladyjacks will continue their quest for the SLC Tournament next week when it hosts McNeese State on Thursday, and Lamar on Saturday for senior night at Johnson Coliseum.
