MILLSBORO, Del. - Stephen F. Austin won all three of its matches in bracket play Sunday to move up to seventh on the final day of the Hawk Classic. SFA went 9-4 overall against a 20-team field that featured 17 nationally ranked teams.
"We had a great day on Sunday," SFA head coach Laura Cramer said. "Everybody pulled together for some big, big wins against some tough competition."
The final day consisted of three best-of-seven baker contests. SFA opened with a four-game sweep against nationally ranked Vanderbilt. The Ladyjacks won, 220-172, in the opener, 220-199 in Game 2, 249-194 in the third game and took a close 175-174 win in the decisive game.
Valparaiso, another nationally ranked foe, took six games to dispatch in the second match of the day. SFA dropped the first game, 188-183, but rallied to win Games 2 and 3 (176-164 and 166-154) before losing a one-pin decision in the fourth, 212-211. But the Ladyjacks sealed the win with a 158-143 verdict in Game 5 and a decisive 206-180 win in Game 6.
In the third and final match of the day, SFA squared off with Fairleigh Dickinson, the second time on the weekend for the Ladyjacks to meet the defending national champions. SFA took two games to open the match, then closed with two straight wins to take the decision in five. The Ladyjacks won Game 1, 215-182, then took a 179-161 verdict in the second game. SFA dropped Game 3, 214-181, but rallied for a 225-214 win in Game 4. The Ladyjacks closed the match out with a 193-167 decision in the fifth.
The strong performance at the Hawk Classic closes out SFA's fall schedule. The Ladyjacks won't be back in action until Jan. 14 when they open play in the three-day ASU Midwinter Classic.
