UP NEXT
Already nearing the midpoint of the league season, the Ladyjacks will trek down I-35 next week as they begin a stretch of three of four matches on the row.
SFA will take on UT-Arlington on the stage at Texas Hall before going to Strahan Coliseum for a battle with defending SLC Tournament champion Texas State.
CHASING 1,000: Senior Kelsey Owens and sophomore Madison Hanlan are each nearing 1,000 for their careers in their primary stat, respecitively. Owens picked up 22 kills in two matches over the weekend, while Hanlan added 28 digs to her total. Nineteen matches into the 2010 season, Owens sits at 872 kills for her career, while Hanlan is not only racing toward the 1,000-mark for her career, but could make it into the school's all-time top 10 in that category by the end of the season. As for Owens, the senior needs to average 10.7 kills per match over the last 12 matches of the regular season to reach the 1,000-kill plateau before the start of the Southland Conference Tournament. Hanlan, on the other hand, has 918 career digs and needs 82 more to get to 1,000, but needs 223 digs to reach the school's all-time top 10. Oddly enough, that mark will likely be pushed farther away as it is senior Laurel Kuepker that currently sits 10th all-time at SFA with 1,141 career digs.
OWENS OWNS THE ORANGE: If political races were won based on athletic accomplishment, Kelsey Owens might have an outside shot at mayor of Huntsville if voters looked strictly at what she has done in her three matches at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in her career. The senior has averaged 3.42 kills per set in five caeer matches against Sam Houston State, but has been even more impressive in Hunstville where she has averaged 4.33 kills per set in two matches. As a freshman Owens had 18 kills in four sets, and landed 21 kills there last season in a five-setter.
KUEPKER NEARING TOP 10: Senior Laurel Kuepker moved into the top 10 at SFA in digs on Thursday, picking up seven digs to pass Julie Goodson for 10th all-time at SFA in that category. With 64 more this season she would tie for eighth at the school, with seventh place still a distant 215 digs beyond that.
