NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Despite a 24-point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining, the third-ranked Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team was unable to hold off Texas State. The Bobcats rolled into Homer Bryce Stadium Saturday afternoon and recorded 27-24 win over SFA. The loss marked the Lumberjacks' first setback since a season-opening loss at Texas A&M in September. It also ended a nine-game home win streak, dating back to the 2009 season opener.
The Lumberjacks appeared to be rolling to their seventh victory of the season leading 24-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining, but that is when everything went wrong for SFA. Following a Texas State touchdown, SFA fumbled the ball away on its very next play from scrimmage, resulting in a Tim Hawkins' touchdown run four plays later.
After forcing a three-and-out, DaMarcus Griggs returned a Drew Nelson punt 73 yards for a touchdown cutting the SFA lead to three points, 24-21. The Lumberjacks got the ball back and appeared to driving for the knockout punch, but SFA fumbled the ball away again, and Texas State took advantage of the miscue. Hawkins gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game when he found Daren Dillard from 28 yards out with 1:10 remaining handing Texas State a three-point advantage, 27-24, following the missed extra-point attempt.
Senior quarterback Jeremy Moses guided the Lumberjacks to the Bobcat 30-yard line with three seconds remaining, where SFA lined up a 47-yard attempt for the freshman Thomas Henshaw. But Henshaw, who connected on a career-best 47 yarder earlier in the game, pushed the kick wide to the left capping the come-from-behind victory for the Bobcats (4-4/1-3 SLC).
Moses finished the game 38-of-55 for 335 yards and three touchdowns. The Lumberjacks added 111 rushing yards, behind a career-high 66 from freshman Jeremy Barnes. Sophomore Devin Ducote led the defensive effort with a game-high 17 tackles.
SFA returns to action Saturday when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to take on Nicholls. The game against the Colonels is slated to begin at 4 p.m. from Guidry Stadium.
