HOUSTON, Texas - The annual Battle of the Piney Woods is less than a week away, and the 2010 meeting will carry conference title implications. Both teams enter the showdown riding win streaks. The fourth-ranked Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks have won five-straight games since a season-opening setback at Texas A&M, while the Bearkats have won four straight following an 0-2 start to the season.
Tickets are still available, but less than 9,000 remain. Tickets range from $15-$35 and can be purchased through the SFA Ticket Office at (936) 468-JACK.
"We've been extremely impressed with the way sales have gone so far," said Chris Keeney, general manager of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment. "Bearkat and Lumberjack fans have a great deal of pride and passion for their schools and have proven that with this game. We expect to sell the game out with 26,000 fans, which will make next Saturday an extremely special day."
The Battle of the Piney Woods dates back to 1923, with Sam Houston State holding a 48-34-2 edge in the series. The Lumberjacks ended a five-game skid in the series with a 42-3 win over Sam Houston State. It was the largest margin of victory in the series.
