
Second-Half Run Leads to SFA Win

HAMMOND, La. - The Ladyjacks utilized an 18-2 second-half run to pull away from Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon at the University Center in Hammond, La. Stephen F. Austin recorded a 75-61 victory over the Lady Lions to improve to 9-7 on the season, and 4-1 in Southland Conference play.
The game remained close throughout the first half. The opening 20 minutes turned into a defensive struggle before SFA started to heat up just before the intermission. The Ladyjacks finished the half 15-of-32 (.469), while holding Southeastern Louisiana to an 8-of-26 (.308) performance from the floor. SLU finished the opening half 11-of-14 (.786) from the stripe.
The Ladyjacks led throughout the first half, and although Southeastern Louisiana cut the lead to one on numerous occasions, SFA never surrendered the lead. SFA took its biggest lead of the half in the locker room, 34-27. The Lady Lions were able to hang in the game during the opening half due to their success at the free throw line.
The Lady Lions jumped out of the gate quick in the second half. After SFA extended the lead to eight, Southeastern Louisiana tied the game at 39 after knocking down 5 of their first 7 attempts. The Ladyjacks responded to the rally with a run of their own. SFA went on a 10-0 run sparked by a Whitney Cormier three-pointer. SFA eventually extended its lead to 18 points. The Lady Lions were able to cut the lead to 10 late in the game but could get no closer as SFA held on for the 14 point win.
SFA finished the game 27-of-59 (.458) from the floor, while holding Southeastern Louisiana to 33 percent. The Lady Lions held the edge on the glass, 46-43.
The Ladyjacks were led by senior Whitney Cormier's 18 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Tammara Marion added 14 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Lions were led by a 21-point, nine-rebound effort from Rashima Jenkins.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday when they host Northwestern State. The game against the Lady Demons is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the Willliam R. Johnson Coliseum.
