NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team led only once Wednesday night dropping a 68-64 decision to Northwestern State. The loss drops SFA to 9-8 overall, and 4-2 in the Southland Conference, a half game back of Northwestern State (11-7/4-1 SLC).
Northwestern State's first three field goals were three-pointers as the Lady Demons jumped out to an early five-point advantage. The Lady Demons pushed that lead to as many as 11 points before SFA cut into the advantage just before half time. The Ladyjacks closed out the half on a 12-5 run to cut the lead to four, 32-28, heading into the intermission.
Although the Lady Demons didn't record another three in the opening half after the 16-minute mark, Northwestern State was able to maintain an advantage due to some strong post play. The Lady Demons held an 18-14 advantage in points in the paint, led by Sherrion Thomas' 11 points and eight rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half. The Lady Demons were 13-of-39 (.333) from the floor, while SFA was 11-of-34 (.324).
The Ladyjacks continued to chip away at the Northwestern State lead, and took their first advantage of the game when junior Toni Davis hit a layup, and connected on the free throw following a foul with 14:19 remaining. It was SFA's first and only lead of the game.
The Lady Demons pushed their lead to as many as six points several times in the second half before SFA made one final push. Following a Thomas' missed free throw, sophomore Courtney Conwright drilled an off balance three-pointer to cut the Lady Demon lead down to two, 66-64 with five seconds remaining, but Northwestern State's Lyndzee Green knocked down both free throws at the other end to ice the win.
The Ladyjacks finished the game 26-of-72 (.361) from the field, and 5-of-20 (.250) from beyond the arc. Northwestern State was 27-of-75 (.360). SFA won the battle on the boards, 53-47.
SFA was led by sophomore Tammara Marion's 18 points, while Davis added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Jordan Ford chipped in 12 points. Davis was one of three Ladyjacks with double-figure rebounds as junior Ebony Alexander and senior Whitney Cormier each pulled down 10. The Lady Demons were led by Thomas' 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they host McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
