NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Jordan Glynn scored 18 points and pulled down 21 rebounds to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 73-64 win over Texas College Saturday in the Lumberjacks' final non-conference game of the season. Glynn's 21 rebounds are a career high and marked the first 20-board game by a Lumberjack in 15 years, as he helped SFA win its fourth straight game.
The `Jacks improve to 10-3 with the verdict, their best pre-conference record since going 12-2 in non-conference action in the 2007-08 season. Texas College moves to 5-5.
Glynn was one of three Lumberjacks to score in double digits. Junior center Jereal Scott added 16 - 12 in the second period - and senior guard Walt Harris scored 14 - all after halftime. SFA outscored the Steers, 42-38, in the second period, when the `Jacks upped their shooting percentage from 38 percent to 52 percent.
SFA's largest lead of the night was 11 with 15:06 to play in the game. But Texas College chipped away until the advantage was down to two (47-45) with 7:33 to go. The `Jacks responded with a 5-0 run - a free throw by Scott, jumper by Harris and a tip-in by Glynn - to get some breathing room, and held on down the stretch for the win.
For the game, SFA shot 44.6 percent, while holding Texas College to 39 percent. The Lumberjacks finished with a 42-32 edge in rebounding and outscored the Steers, 32-28, in the paint after going to the break with a two-point deficit in scoring down low. The `Jacks pulled down 12 offensive boards - seven by Glynn - and outscored Texas College, 15-11, in second-chance points.
SFA trailed by as many as five in the first half. But Glynn and junior guard Austin Falke hit jumpers on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to one (25-24) with 6:43 to play. Neither team scored over the next 4:40, but senior forward Aaron Smith gave the `Jacks a one-point lead with two free throws at the 2:03 mark, and Falke connected on the next possession to stretch it to 28-25.
Smith followed with a 3-pointer on the next SFA touch to widen the lead to six. Texas College finally broke its scoring slump with a free throw by Antonio Odom with five seconds to play. The Steers went to halftime on a field goal drought that began at the 7:37 mark and took them from a five-point lead to a five-point deficit (31-26) at the break.
Falke finished with nine points and three assists. Smith added five, and freshman center Will Reinke came off the bench for six points and three blocked shots. Senior point guard Eric Bell finished with three points, four assists and two steals.
Treyton Manning scored 20 points to lead the Steers. David Hymes and Jacobie Bias joined him in double digits with 14 and 13, respectively.
Glynn's 21-rebound effort marks the first 20-board performance since Javan Rouzan pulled down 20 in a game against Baylor during the 1994-95 season. Saturday's performance gives him six double-doubles on the year and seven double-digit rebounding games this season - both league-leading figures. The 21 rebounds he recorded Saturday are the second-most posted by an individual player in the Southland Conference this season.
SFA will open Southland play Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats will be televised on SLC-TV, the Southland Conference's television network.
