NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team released its 2009-10 schedule head coach Lee Ann Riley announced Wednesday afternoon. The schedule is highlighted by games against the Big 10, Big 12, Conference USA and the Western Athletic Conference, before SFA opens league play.
"We are real excited about the upcoming season," said Riley. "The one thing that I really like about this schedule is that we get to start off with four consecutive games at home, including our two exhibition games. Everything we do in the non-conference season is to prepare us of the conference schedule.
"We have a veteran team returning this season which should be an asset as we face a tough stretch in December away from Nacogdoches," added Riley.
The Ladyjacks will open the season with consecutive homes games beginning Saturday, Nov. 14 against North Texas. SFA will return to the court the following Saturday to host Rice, before playing eight of their next nine away from Nacogdoches.
SFA will begin its road swing by traveling to Las Cruces, N.M., to play in the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic. Although hosted by New Mexico State, the Ladyjacks will face Michigan (Friday, Nov. 27) on the first night, and turn around and play Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (Saturday, Nov. 28) 24 hours later.
SFA will open the month of December in College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M (Wednesday, Dec. 2). The game against the Aggies is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Reed Arena. The Ladyjacks lone home contest during the nine-game stretch will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, when SFA hosts Texas Southern.
Riley's troops will spend the rest of December away from Nacogdoches. The Ladyjacks will travel to Houston, Texas, Saturday, Dec. 12, to face Houston Baptist, and will be in New Orleans, La., eight days later to face Tulane.
The Ladyjacks will close out the month in San Antonio, Texas, at the UTSA/New Year's Classic. The Ladyjacks open the two-day event against Louisiana Tech Tuesday, Dec. 29. SFA returns to the court 24 hours later to face Maine.
SFA will open the New Year, and close out the non-conference portion of the schedule Monday, Jan. 4 at Tulsa. The Southland Conference slate will begin Saturday, Jan. 9, when SFA hosts rival Sam Houston State. The 6 p.m. contest will be the lone meeting between two teams during the upcoming season.
The Ladyjacks will play only 11 games in front the home fans before preparing for the Southland Conference Championship tournament which will begin Wednesday, Mar. 10, in Katy, Texas.
SFA will host exhibition games against St. Mary's (Nov. 2) and Ouachita Baptist (Nov. 6) before opening regular-season play.
