FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Breanne Vernon has been named the Southland Conference Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement made Tuesday afternoon by league officials. Vernon takes the first such honor of the season and first of her career, after scoring a pair of goals in her collegiate debut over the weekend.
The redshirt freshman from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, put two shots in the back of the net, including the game-winner, in Sunday's season-opening 3-1 victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. Her first goal came in the 80th minute, breaking a 1-1 tie, and making her the first Ladyjack freshman since 2006 to score in her collegiate debut. The second goal found the net just over three minutes later and set the final score.
Vernon was originally part of SFA's 2007 signing class under former head coach Jaime Frias. But she sat out the 2007 and 2008 season recovering from a knee injury sustained before she set foot on campus.
Vernon is the first Ladyjack to take the SLC Offensive Player of the Week award since teammate Megan Cash won it on Oct. 14 of last season. In all, SFA players earned four player of the week honors last season, including two on the offensive end.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action this weekend, when SFA heads to El Paso to compete in the UTEP Miner Classic. SFA will meet host team UTEP Friday in a 7:30 p.m. contest, then take on Utah State Sunday at 10 a.m.
