NACOGDOCHES, Texas - If the Stephen F. Austin defense got the upper hand in the first scrimmage of the season, the Lumberjack offense exacted revenge Saturday night. Junior quarterback Jeremy Moses led SFA to four scoring drives in five attempts. In fact, the only series that Moses didn't lead the offense to a scoring drive was the first of the night.
"We expected the offense to come tonight and show a lot of improvement from last week," said SFA head coach J.C. Harper. "We would have been real disappointed had that not been the case. I was proud of the defenses effort, as they continue to fly around the field."
The scrimmage, which pitted the first-team offense against the second-team defense, and vice versa, saw six touchdowns and a field goal on the night. Moses finished the night 12-of-17 (.706) for 248 yards and four TDs, while sophomore Dalton Williams completed 15-of-22 (.682) passes for 118 yards and one touchdown.
Williams also had the offense's lone turnover on the night when he threw an interception, but the pick was more because of a great play by the Lumberjack defense, instead of a poor decision by Williams. The sophomore gunslinger appeared to have connected with classmate Brandon Scott for a huge gain over the middle until junior Chad Haynes separated Scott from the ball, only to see Cory Barlow scoop the ball and return the other direction. Haynes finished the scrimmage with only two tackles, but made two vicious hits to break up would-be completions late in the contest.
True freshman Brady Attaway also saw playing time under center Saturday night, and continues to look strong. The Whitehouse native was 12-for-20 (.600) for 129 yards and a score.
"I continue to be real pleased with all three of our quarterbacks," said Harper. "They are doing a great job. There is no question that Moses is our starter, but if something happens to him I have complete confidence in both Dalton (Williams) and Brady (Attaway)."
The Lumberjacks carried the ball 14 times for 82 yards. Senior Vincent Pervis led the way with four rushes for 44 yards.
Freshman Cordell Roberson had one of the more impressive nights for the Lumberjack receivers. The rookie from Jefferson, Texas, hauled in three passes for 57 yards, including two receptions deep in opposing territory to set up touchdowns. Senior Aaron Rhea recorded four catches for 121 yards. Senior receivers Contrevious Parks and Duane Brooks each had two touchdown receptions, while Scott hauled in the other.
Junior Rainey Sternes led the defensive effort with four tackles, including three sacks. Sophomore defensive lineman Weekendfer Saurit recorded three stops and was credited with two sacks.
