LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE vs. MCNEESE STATE GAME STORY
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team will open the 2009 season Sunday against Louisiana-Lafayette. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start from the Ragin' Cajuns Track and Soccer Facility.
SFA split its two preseason exhibitions, dropping a 3-2 decision to SMU and defeating Houston Baptist, 5-1. Sunday's game will mark the first meeting between the Ladyjacks and Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Cajuns opened their season Friday against Southland Conference foe McNeese State. The teams played through two overtimes to a 1-1 tie. The Cowgirls scored in the 16th minute to take the early lead, but Louisiana-Lafayette's Courtney Hofland tied the count with fewer than eight minutes to play. The strike made Hofland the Cajuns' career leader in goals scored with 16.
SFA is 2-2-1 in its last five season openers but hasn't won a season-opening road game since defeating Arkansas State, 1-0, to begin the 2001 campaign. The Ladyjacks dropped a 5-0 decision at TCU in last year's season opener.
SFA is coming off a 9-7-2 record in 2008 and a 6-2-1 mark that earned a second-place tie in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks bring back 11 players from that squad who saw significant playing time last year. Louisiana-Lafayette went 5-12-2 in 2008 and finished with a 3-7-1 record in the Sun Belt Conference.
SFA is scheduled for two games in the UTEP Miner Classic next weekend. The Ladyjacks will take on host team UTEP Friday, then square off with Utah State on Sunday morning.
