FRISCO, Texas - Senior Megan Cash and junior Kelli Barnes were each named to the 2009 Preseason All-Southland Conference team, announced Tuesday by league officials. Cash was named to the first team with Barnes earning a spot on the second team.
Cash is one of three seniors returning for SFA this season. The Austin, Texas, native scored six goals a year ago, tying for the team lead. She added an assist and finished with 13 points, second on the team. Her 22 shots on goal and .688 SOG percentage were both team-highs. She was an honorable-mention selection to the 2008 All-SLC teams.
Barnes was one of SFA's most dependable players a year ago. The defender from Allen, Texas, started every game for the Ladyjacks and played more minutes (1,600) than any other player on the team. Barnes registered one assist and took three shots on the season.
The two selections to this year's squad are the fewest for SFA since 2002, when former SLC Freshman of the Year Kendra Cannon was the Ladyjacks' lone representative on the preseason list. Nine of the 11 first-team selections this season were automatic, meaning the players were returning all-conference honorees from last season. Cash was one of just two at-large selections voted onto the first-team.
The Ladyjacks begin their 2009 season Tuesday afternoon with a home scrimmage against SMU. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
