FRISCO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team is projected to finish second in the Southland Conference, according to preseason polling of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. In both preseason polls, announced Tuesday by Southland officials, SFA is slotted just behind defending regular-season and tournament champion Texas State.
This marks the sixth straight season for the Ladyjacks to land in the top two in preseason polling, although it is the first time since 2004 that SFA has not been favored to win the league in at least one of the two polls.
In the coaches' poll, SFA earned 79 points and one first-place vote to finish 10 points behind Texas State. UTSA, projected to finish third, garnered 69 points. Among the sports information directors, Texas State is an even heavier favorite to repeat. The Bobcats took all nine potential first-place votes and raked in a perfect total of 90 points, while SFA's 73 points edged out UTSA (71).
SFA returns 12 letterwinners and six starters from its 2008 team that went 9-7-2. The Ladyjacks begin the season with 18 newcomers on the roster. SFA is set to open the exhibition slate Tuesday afternoon with a home game against SMU.
